Feel Like the Underdog? Social Media Can Help.

Sports make me really excited about the underdog.

The idea that a team that had everything stacked against them came through and beat all the big guys to make it to the end is such an inspiration.  But it also makes me think a lot about the underdog in the rest of my life, especially, the small business.

Being a small business owner myself, the odds constantly feel stacked against me.  And in a lot of ways they are.  If I don’t do the work, then no one will.  This business doesn’t run on it’s own, and if you are a small business owner, you know exactly what I am talking about.  And you know what?  It’s true!  However, you should never feel like the underdog when it comes to social media.

Social media is the one thing that you should not feel overwhelmed with, and you definitely shouldn’t feel like the underdog.  It doesn’t matter if you make a billion dollars a year, or a couple bucks a year, social media channels are all the same.  Sure, there are little upgrades here and there that can require a little cash, but for the most part, everything is the same.  It’s this standardized playing field that allows the small business owner to shine.

I have seen a lot of big businesses do social media poorly and it has hurt them.  I have also seen a lot of small businesses do social media great and it has rewarded them!  Just like you would go out and network with friends and people you meet about your business, the same goes for social media.  You need to be active and get your name out, looking for people to connect with, and ways to spread the word about your company.  However, when they come visit your site, be sure you have something there for them to stick around to see.  Being overly self promotional will turn them off, but if you are a resource for industry news and knowledge, they will want to know more.  The rest, is up to you.

Don’t feel like the underdog, social media is growing at an astonishing rate and we strongly believe that if companies aren’t on social media, then in 5 years they will not exist.  Don’t be one of those companies.  Embrace it, learn it, leverage it.  The results will be a slam dunk.  (had to throw that in there…)
