If all it took were a new social media channel to get me excited, I would be in a constant state of euphoria. It seems that new social media sites are literally showing up everyday. However, there is one new app that is actually worth knowing about, and that’s Vine.
What is Vine? Basically, Vine is doing for videos what Twitter did for blogs. Twitter = 140 character limit. Vine = 6 second limit.
Short. Sweet. To the point.
So why should you care? At this point, it’s something to be aware of and see if it’s a good fit for your business. If you are active on Twitter, it can be a great way to showcase videos in addition to text updates and pictures. If not, you might want to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to see if it is really something worth investing your time into.
For me, it really highlights the popularity of video and visual content. We talk a lot about creating engaging content. When it comes to video, we always say that shorter is better. Vine is taking it to the extreme (6 seconds), but it brings up a great point. People are not interested in watching a feature length film about your business, or anything, when they are on social media. They don’t have time for that. What they will consume is something short, sweet and to the point.
As you create content, keep Twitter and Vine in the back of your mind. Think about how you can engage your audience in 140 characters, and how you can engage them in 6 seconds – because the first 140 characters that you write and the first 6 seconds of video you produce will either engage your audience or it won’t. If it doesn’t, you just missed an opportunity to tell the story of your business.
